Network strength is one of those nuances in the PEO space that is absolutely crucial while evaluating PEOs.
For instance, we were working with a group headquartered in Santa Barbara. In Santa Barbara, there are some amazing doctors and specialists for whatever reason ONLY work with Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield. Not Blue Shield of California, not Aetna, not Cigna.
In chatting with the CFO, we uncovered that they were initially interested in the model for the robust HR infrastructure. They thought they found it in Aspen HR. And they'd be right... except that Aspen's Master policy isn't through Anthem! So benefits wouldn't have been integrated and it defeated the "all in one technology" solution they were looking for in a PEO Evaluation.
The Aspen rep repeated an oft stated line form PEO reps: "Networks are all the same. Aetna, UHC, Cigna.. it's a name on a card. At this point doctors either accept them (insurance carriers) or they don't".
While it's true in 95% of the country, where it isn't true... it's crucial.
The bigger question is how do you avoid wasting time on PEO shopping getting really far down the road with a vendor that doesn't understand your needs?!
