I believe it was the late 21st century philosopher, L. Udacris, that so quippingly posed the question:

Are you custom-made, custom-paid, or just custom fitted?

What we at the distillery believe he was so eloquently talking about was the nuance between the various levels of prestige within the "car upgrade" world.

It's a lovely analogy for PEOs when it comes time to connect their sphere's of influence, to the rest of your organization.  Fancy new players like Rippling tout bi-directional APIs, old stalwarts like TriNet and Insperity, claim to be able to build custom AIs with their open architecture, and even the dinosaur of the industry that still has quite a bit of bite left, Prism, claims to produce custom exports that can be imported with the click of a button.

But you as a business owner no doubt went the PEO route, at least in part, because you enjoy an "all in one" solution.  The question is, when you try to attach your HR world, to the rest... are you custom made... custom paid... or just custom fitted!?

We've developed a bit of a methodology to untangle the wires of communications within your organization.

First:

Identify what information you'd like to be passed.

Second:

Identify the directions you'd like to see it passed.

Third:

Ask a solution specialist (not a sales person who is paid to say yes to your problem questions... a tech expert or demo specialist who's far less likely to lie)

Trust... but verify... In other words, accept the solution specialist's answer on capabilities of integration... but ask to speak with a reference using the integration.  If they can't produce one, that's a giant red flag.

Last: Assess the value of the integration

Honestly, far too often we see folks pigeonhole themselves to a few specific vendors on the basis of them having an integration (however tenuous) with another software.  It can be important... but it shouldn't necessarily dictate everything.  Really determine the difference between a manual drag/drop step of a CSV file... and an automated bi-directional API.  The answer may not be the cost of the vendor able to provide it!
